“Grace not works” is Lutheran and Calvinist Protestant. Luther wanted to get rid of the book of James because it says you have to do social justice in order to go to Heaven. But he didn’t quite dare follow through, and Calvin resolved the contradiction by doubling down on the doctrine of human depravity. Eli said it: “It’s built into their theology that it’s more important to hold the Bible than it is to help people, and when you think about that, it explains a lot in the world.”

Thank you, I wasn’t taught this in the Protestant churches Methodist, Congregational and Unitarian churches I went to growing up. “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” James 2:17 - was emphasized. The evangelical churches I went to put greater emphasis on being saved above all else (and converting others). I was unaware of this history but knew that Calvin was an asshole. This all checks out.
