This week, we sucker Cecil into joining us for part one of the Shrug-tacular.--Edit: If you downloaded the episode right away, you'll have gotten a file where I accidentally left the ads in place and moved the skits to the end instead of vice versa. Apologies. If you have that version, deleting and re-downloading should correct the problem.

I thought forcing me to listen to ads was some kind of meta commentary on wealth and inequality or something tied in to Atlas Shrugged. Glad it was just a glitch 😂

Joe Schafer

I wish Cecil was with them all the time. Also Tom I guess... lol!

General Contact Unit Problem Child

so if you're a right winger in the mid-1950s, I sort of get being concerned that government Keynesian intervention in the market might be going too far and could lead to some kind of state socialism. I think that’s a very wrong understanding of economics and politics but I can sort of see how you get there without being crazy. …But to hold that belief in 2011 when this movie was made. The people who made this movie thought the US government was in danger of interfering in the economy TOO MUCH just 3 years after the fucking 2008 finical crisis?!!!?

Wandering_Idiot

This is why we have Ian instead of nice things…

Kurt Montandon

The people like Art Laffer who believed that Obama started the Great Recession two years before he even took office aren't starting from or ending up at a rational - or even sane - viewpoint.

Krostos

It's really weird how the objectivist makes it so the greatest invention in the history of mankind is created by socialists.

Kendallyn Frost

Okay! I died at the "plonor" portmanteau 🤣

Oxford Comma is Mandatory

It sure seems like if there were a test for being able to vote it should only be "Do you agree with Atlas Shrugged?". It really shows how ignorant Ayne was to reality.

Khristle

I listened to the fuck up version with the ads instead of skits. I thought that was some sort of brilliant meta joke since this is fuckin Rand

Uriah Jackson

No surprise considering Laffer is famous for a multiply flawed economic hypothesis.

Uriah Jackson

I don't know that there's any better indictment of objectivism than realizing it views altruism as a vice.

Mobius Rex

Atlas Shrugged is great if you read it as a beautiful gay love story between Rearden and Francisco.

Someday Sera

Glad to hear Heath hates the movie just as much as the book. If you've never played Bioshock back in the day, it's basically an entire game dedicated to how stupid Ayan Rand's philosophy was. Give it a look.

Bobby Tropicana

I genuinely hope that after you finish this trilogy, you guys do the Gary Cooper version of The Fountain Head. It's quite possibly one of the greatest unintentional comedies of all time.

Chris M

This is the best Atlas Shrugged humor since I read the Cobra Commander dialogues that point out stupidities in the book years ago.

Wesley Aaron

I have to know; did you guys watch the making of for these movies. It's beautifully awful and they talk Ayn up soo much lol.

Unofficial_Opinion

I need a transcript for this please because I want to see Eli’s Ayn Rand explaining cold fusion in FUCKING PRINT. Please. Because I nearly crashed my car during it. Thank you.

Sir Arcane

None of these movies made money. They got less less money and they literally could not get worse ratings by the end. COLLECTIVELY across 3 Movieish things Rotten Tomatoes they could not get 20% collectively . Film Release date Rotten Tomatoes Metacritic Budget Gross Part I 04-15-2011 12% (51 reviews) 28 (19 reviews) $20 million $4,627,375 Part II 10-12-2012 4% (23 reviews) 26 (11 reviews) $10 million $3,336,053 Part III 09-26-2014 0% (10 reviews) 9 (7 reviews) $5 million $846,704 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_Shrugged_(film_series)

Total Absolutism

Deeply concerning that Cobra Commander could end up being the lesser evil.

yourgirlislovely

The way I fangirled over this episode!!! Thank you for covering this awful adaptation of my most loathed author!

Nicolette

It sounds like this is the “every-man” life going on as the awesome pirate movie is going on just out of frame.

Marcus

Was that ‘mice in a maze in his desk’ bit a Tango and Cash deep cut…?

Denise Huston

I love that you think he could possibly do 2 distinct accents for that.
