This week, Cara joins us for the story of a Christian narcissist and how horribly inconvenienced she is by the death of her atheist friend.

HEY! If you get a doctorate, you’re a doctor, Cara! Don’t sell yourself short!

Ada the Muscle Witch

Do Cara, Thomas and others need to start a support group for guest masochists?

VQD

Per out-of-context lede I'm assuming the cancer-ridden friend is just Zapffe in drag. Edit: to be clear, Zapffe in Drag is an absolutely incredible character

Fix the Vote

How do you keep getting Cara back? Love it

Steve Dicus

I’m a nurse. And I’ve adopted two kids. It’s NOT expensive if you foster, it’s only expensive if you special order healthy white babies. There’s plenty in this movie to piss me off.

General Contact Unit Problem Child

I think I have to disagree with the guys one aspect of this. I don’t think it would be her boss’s business if she’s preaching at her friend in her own time when she’s not being paid. Like am I way off? I feel like that would be equivalent to saying it’s a church state separation violation for a public school teacher to teach Sunday school in their own time

AgnesBell

Loved the Caitlin Doughty shout out! Death positivity movement hero!

Kristine VanRaalte

I agree that people should give WAY more thought into having kids.

I can see your point on that but I feel like the character got the information that her friend was dying from her workplace (she kind of seeked her out from this rather than them being current friends or whatnot) and if the sick lady already stated she didn't want any kind of religious stuff involved it puts her employer in a weird situation. I've only listened to the GAM episode, I haven't watched the movie myself. Just my 2 cents!

TenaciousB

If the only reason she knew the woman was dying was because she got protected health information at work, she should have been fired for making contact with or without the proselytizing. Anything you find out about a patient during the course of your job is vault of secrets shit, even if you know them personally. Unless THEY tell you about it, you don't know about it (I'm a hospital pharmacist, I see a LOT of stuff about people I know. Neighbors, friends, etc. I say nothing to anyone. Ever.)

Jon Herrin

Tell me about it. Well, no, it's 30 years too late for me.

Jon Herrin

And yet I "squee!" every time I see that Cara is guesting.

Danial Gibson

What really drives me nuts is if you asked a Christian how the movie would be different by switching the religions views of Jenny and Autumn. An atheist trying to decovert a Christian would be a horror movie to them. Yet the other way around is perfectly fine.

Elvis Manson

The moral: quit your job to spend exactly one night preaching at a dying person, and Deus Ex Machina will shower you with wealth, thus voiding all consequences. (It almost deserves a bingo square.)

Niamh Coghlan

As someone who is currently receiving palliative care, this hit home more than most of these movies.

Abigail Hurley

As someone who has given palliative care to others this left me RAGING. Angry beyond words.

Constance Crisp

The only other movie I ever watched after listening to the podcast was last year's Heaven's Gate, Hell's Flames. Now this. I'm not expecting De Niro and Streep levels of talent, but I don't think the acting should be wooden enough to build a house. Also, what was going on with Jenny's socks at 22:50? They're black on the soles.

I work in hospice, and there are a couple of things... don't ration your hospice care! Hospice can last more than six months! You qualify for hospice if your physician certifies that your condition is terminal and they wouldn't be surprised if you died in that time. With effective pain and symptom management, many patients surpass that six-month mark! (My stepdad forgot to die for two years.) You can be re-certified for another six months as long as your condition remains terminal and your prognosis doesn't change. (Also, on my nonprofit soapbox: 80-90% of hospice care in the US is provided by for-profit corporations that siphon tax money through vulnerable people into the pockets of assholes - like Matt Gaetz' dad, who passed laws to break his hospice competitors, then sold VITAS Hospice for $400M. You ALWAYS get to choose your hospice provider: support your local nonprofits!)
