Our listeners told us this one was too good for us. They told us our lampooning was flying too close to the sun. And they were wrong. Because this movie sucks.

Love that you mentioned Hunchback compared to Prince of Egypt. I think an even more jarring contrast between Hunchback and Prince of Egypt is the blending of hand drawn and CG animation. Hunchback had a well-researched and frankly awe-inspiring animated version of medieval Paris with gorgeous hand drawn animation. They used CGI for some of the crowd shots and the larger set pieces (like the bells). Sometimes the CG shots are jarring and a little janky, but Hunchback has a pretty consistent aesthetic where the audience can accept these things. The Prince of Egypt is TERRIBLE at blending hand drawn animation and CG. It’s painfully obvious that they overly relied on CG animation and it just looks atrocious.

Devil Doc Josue

Yes!!! I've always fucking said this! The soundtrack is fire tho.

Not That Kate

This movie is SO BAD. I watched it with my kids once and it left me with so. many. questions.

SamTheHam

It finally happened! I can take the notification out of my calendar 😂 at least Heath didn’t bump it as Eli warned me about in Toronto 😂

Erica De Parsia

The plot is garbage but the soundtrack and the artwork are decent. Like, two songs are ok. A much better story would be Moses fucking off into the desert and living the nomad lifestyle. GAM, you should really check out Joseph: King of Dreams. It's even worse.

Elvis Manson

(sung to tune of "Gaston" from Beauty and the Beast) No...One's... WILD like Yah-weh! or re- VILED like Yah-weh! No one Murders ev-ry first born CHILD like Yah-weh!

Markus D

I'm extremely confused by the description of this movie sucking. Like, you don't like it, whatever, but... compared to the vast majority of things on GAM!?

Markus D

Joseph is legit trash and has the TERRIBLE moral of "trust God because you can't help yourself".

Biggles

I’m pondering over the repeated insistence that it’s a children movie and I kind of wonder…is it? It’s animated, which is often assumed to be produced for children but I dunno if the production of the movie intended it for very young audiences. I also strongly disagree about the quality of the music (I think most of it is really good). Still funny ep tho!

Erica De Parsia

Exactly. The perfect movie for GAM. "Nurture this tree in your torture chamber and GOD will provide."

Markus D

I know that DreamWorks wanted it to be an epic so I get the impression that it's appropriate for children, but they weren't like... the main audience necessarily. It definitely doesn't feel like the kind of movie you just put on to babysit your kids.

SamTheHam

The rating is PG — which is technically Kid Friendly with parental guidance. Now, I don’t agree I would let my kids watch it but I did as a kid and still remember this entire movie word for word 🙃. It was fucked up

Biggles

I’m of the opinion that you can make good movies for younger audiences with heavier subjects. Thinking back on this movie I think the biggest failing is that it’s not fully judgmental of the source material. I think the drama in Exodus is an excellent source for story telling and I think this movie handles it rather well. The human drama between Moses and Ramesses is great. What the movie doesn’t do really well is questioning if God is truly acting in the right with his actions. Even the Ridley Scott movie Exodus made Moses explicitly against God on several points. Ultimately I think this is a case of a movie I find good as a drama piece but wholly lacking in terms of thematic discussion. There’s no ambiguity regarding good v evil from the movie’s perspective which is very jarring indeed.

Julie Wine&Reason

Excellent take down. This movie made me feel nauseated more than once with the plagues and child murder.

Markus D

They deal in COMEDY.

Markus D

I think that it's not critical enough of Yahweh but he's also portrayed as something that doesn't necessarily deal in human morals.

Denise Huston

Ngl, feel like the reason they gave Pharoah a dead kid is because they did it in The Ten Commandments. Also, slightly subversive to have the voice of God also be the voice of your main character, since he was just talking to himself anyway.

that 9 fingered lesbian

My wife had me watch this when we heard it was gonna be a GAM episode because she liked it as a kid. Spot on as always, guys, this movie was hot garbage. I cannot believe that being kicked off this movie to go work on Shrek was considered a punishment. 🙃

General Contact Unit Problem Child

The only part of this movie that made me laugh is when Moses approaches Ramesses in the river and says “let my people go” Ramesses responded with “still gnawing on that bone”. Like they might as well have had him say “gaw! Are you still going on about me enslaving all your relatives? Change the God damn record already”

General Contact Unit Problem Child

Am I giving this movie too much credit in assuming they have Ramesses live at the end because we know from his Mummy that the real Ramesses lived to be an old man?

An Artist

I listened to some of the music because I didn't remember it. Holy shit. It's honestly what happens when you don't understand what makes a musical a musical. Terrible songs and *boring*. Compare to Hunchback of Notre Dame (which is also religious lol and came out before PoE). While I will not defend the movie itself, I *will* defend the music of it. The movie is problematic as hell, but it's a great example of how to pace musical numbers and how to write lyrics to move a story along.

Lexy

Really disappointed by this episode, solely because Eli did not in fact buy heathisapeeholeguy.com

El Oso Café

I never realized how many people hate this movie.

Flantastic02

Never thought of that. Could very well be

Sherri Antal

This was the movie at a birthday party when my kids were little. A girl next to me leaned over and said "My grandma and Grandpa are from Egypt, they're not mean." I warned her mom to prepare for questions! Hate this movie, it's definitely not for children!

Mikelle Cagle

Wow. I loved this when it first came out. Clearly I need to re-visit it.

Mikelle Cagle

Oddly enough, they could have made the lullaby scene work, if they had followed the original story.

Mikelle Cagle

In Exodus, the older sister convinces Pharoah’s daughter to hire the mom as wetnurse. If they had shown the mom caring for him through early childhood, it would make more sense that he could remember the song. (I read the story as a breastfeeding mom, so that part stuck out to me.)

Markus D

I honestly don't get where the hate is coming from. I can understand disliking something because not everything is for everyone but I legit can't think of why this movie would be hot garbage to anyone. Like it's just purely too competently made. Like I think The Little Mermaid has pretty dull music and it's poorly paced, but I wouldn't call it hot garbage--it's just a very simplistic, kid-oriented movie.

Mikelle Cagle

I agree. They both have problematic aspects, but they’re well made, at least

Unofficial_Opinion

Am I wrong or when you’re referring to Happy Madison…don’t you mean Karl Weathers?

I’mNotSayingThat

Could’ve mentioned some of the things they deliberately left out of the movie, like the whole emergency circumcision episode during Moses’ return to Egypt, or “Bye, Jethro, I promise I won’t come back and genocide your entire tribe and steal your girlfolk as sex slaves in a few years!”

Cbz

As someone who still routinely listens to songs from the soundtrack and still randomly sings the opening song out loud, I can assure you that the songs SLAP(granted, I am sure some of them don't, but enough do that I feel my point stands)!

I’mNotSayingThat

The movie is competently made, the story it’s adapting is *horrible* to the point they have to redact it left and right and abruptly end it before the atrocities ramp up.

kaizerlith

Yeah you're right. Lol. It's not Danny Glover. It is Carl Weathers in Happy Gilmore, so dude from Predator 1 not the guy from Predator 2.

Kendallyn Frost

Sooooo my PUBLIC middle school choir (that I was a part of) sang "When You Believe" at my eighth grade graduation. Reeeeal weird tone for a graduation; I mean I guess finally getting out of middle school probably feels about the same as escaping enslavement! I think our choir of 13 & 14 year-old NOT JEWISH (except for 1) children pronounced the Hebrew about as well children singing it in the movie. We were coached by our choir director on the chet & chaf pronunciation, which definitely sounded super accurate and respectful of the Hebrew language, and not at all like a bunch of kids trying to hock up loogies. For a bit more context this is a school in Kevin McCarthy's district, so the theocracy has had a pretty good stronghold there for A WHILE! (To date myself he wouldn't become it's representative for another 13 years)

Steve Chaput

Good or bad, as I’ve never seen it, so glad you guys rip it apart. Anything promoting the book of fables deserves a quick kick.

EmprahBulborb

I have a fun story for this movie. My grandparents tried to show this movie to my brother and I when we were little because it's a kid friendly pixar movie. Minutes after putting it on I'm bawling and my grandmother has to call my mom to figure out what 's happening. apparently the intro shows a lot of baby murder and little kid me figured that out and was very disturbed by it. I had to be removed from the movie, and have never tried to rewatch it. based on the release date, I was 4

NtimN8r

This movie turned me from non-religous to full-on atheist, slash anti-theist. My mother in-law gave this movie to my son when he was little, and he was barely watching it in the living room while playing legos, and I was sitting on the couch, also barely watching it. Then the baby killing parts came up, and I was thinking that there is no way this is in the bible. So I got a bible from the dollar store and read it cover to cover. Holy hell, man! That changed my whole opinion on religion.

Markus D

I don't think it's promoting the story. It's just an adaptation of the mythology heavily based on the popularity of The Ten Commandments.

Erica De Parsia

I watched next week's cinematic selection. Holy shit. I am so excited.

Al Yako

Hearing Eli say "Gross!" After something Heath said feels like some real growth for the show.

igewbvhmcv

I wanna see them review “Holy Moses” next.

Matt Eldritch

Have you seen the Rebeltaxi video about Dreamworks' 2-D movies? They mention how J:KoD has a horrible depiction of slavery that essentially romanticises the institution.

Andy Ward

I felt this missed the very best part of Exodus which is "but the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart". I've read some mental apologetics for this but the clear reading is that he was going to let them go but God made him not do that, and then killed the babies, and also implies that he could just as easily made him let them go. All in all there are an infinite number of ways in which an omnipotent God could have solved this without *check notes* killing a bunch of babies.

Lissy Strata

I wondered why you chose to do this movie because I remembered it as being really good. And then partway through the episode, I abruptly flashed back to being nine years old and my friend's mom took us to see this in theaters and I was fucking TERRIFIED during the scene where all the firstborns die. Like to the point I had trouble sleeping. And now I'm like "Oh, right...that why I haven't watched it since......" Thanks for covering this one!

Matt Eldritch

I felt the same way, but I was about 7 at the time and it was a VHS copy during a sleepover at my Nanny's home.

Markus Nävergård

I live in Sweden and i remember whean they had bible class in state school. this was before 2000 whean we seperated church and state and i recall the story of Moses and Pharao and i thought back then as a 8 year old that God was a horrible monster. Hell, my mom told me of when i was 4 years old and she put me in the churchs child group to meet friends and i turned to hear after a day and told her " mom, i dont want to listen to this rubbish"
