(haters abound but the truth is that the ukulele is an affable and versatile instrument, perfect for hobbyists and beginners)

content warning for those with a phobia of narcissists: i am about to compare myself to myself...

i cringe at everything i wrote before age 25, as god intended. mercifully the time between publishing and cringing increases as i age and hopefully the things i'm writing now will be spared from my contemptuous spotlight but the pre-frontal-lobe-completion oeuvre exists in my mind as a minecraft oof.

but! when i was 19 i wrote a song called i don't mind. i first sang it here (i bet some of you saw this video on upload...shivers). and even though i should hate it i don't. as hard as i press down on its tooth...it isn't sore. there's pity, for the girl's obvious unhappiness, and her big sad cow eyes, but i like her song. the anomaly makes it worth examination. back then i was the ghost of my student flat, only venturing to the kitchen when everyone was somewhere else; i was the girlfriend of another child rendered emotionally impotent in the face of my complicated sadness, and i his; i lost new friends on purpose by being unresponsive, without understanding why. myriad social miseries followed me from room to room, little life to little life, until i understood, ah, that i'd been the social misery all along. that's what the song's about. all very undiagnosed autism, yes?

why don't i hate it? dunno. i don't remember trying to do anything with the lyrics. not trying to sound clever, i mean, or more worldly, except when i used the word 'amphetamines'; friendless nineteen-year-old me, had, surprise, not done speed(?). otherwise it's unexaggerated unembellished lived experience. my parents were very worried about me around then and i was so frustrated with them for it, couldn't understand why...look at me! but this melancholy was a usual variation of a natural state. my emotional calibration was off. i was totally devoid of self knowledge, direction. a cool pool of water on an even cooler day indeed. poor rascal.

so many differences! my voice is more cursive in the original (and better for it? i think my singing's not so good now (+ is transposed down a key)). my 2024 body is so much looser; when i noticed this it made my stiffness in the original look crazy, like, unclench, unclench! the 2015 take was one of many, many, many and the 2024 take was my first sing all the way through. there's the obvious difference in how the videos look, and what's around me – in 2015 my room was decorated with halloween caution tape and empty bottles of apple sourz, and now it's, uh, not. and i don't know if i'm just projecting the story i've told myself onto myself but i can see in the most recent take that the feeling from the song does live in me but is just being remembered...

anyway the aaaa bbbb rhyme scheme is kind of insane. the honesty is good. honest enough to let me time travel immediately to that place, which makes it precious, and makes me feel very soft and motherly(?) towards my past self. i'm grateful to have the song. singing it made me sad.

(p.s. in other news! new video will be ready tomorrow night i think, which is, like, incredibly on schedule for me. i will do my best for you)

i remember hearing this when it was first uploaded! i covered it incessantly on my ukulele when i was 16. i’m so happy to hear it again :)

hearing the 2024 version and reading ur commentary was so beautiful and moving. thanks for sharing this gem sav & bringing me back to 2015 youtube (what a different world it was back then!) <3

I’ve always liked bittersweet things. This was nice to listen to, and I’m glad it helps you too

Cicada

good God... I watched the original every few days when I was 12. I used an app to download it to my phone so I could listen to it on the way to school. I felt like you had crawled into my brain and were despondently rocking back and forth in there. I remember thinking it was a bit scary to be understood. undiagnosed autism indeed

jonk

I still sing this song all the time, I think it's quite brilliant

malin

god i remember the day this was posted originally so well, oh how the time flies,, 2015 truly feels like some strange and distant fever dream (not sure i’d want to go back but i suppose everything can be nice in retrospect, nostalgia’s a strange thing). lovely to hear a new rendition and thoughts from a new perspective <3 there’s just something about that pure and unadulterated 19 year old sentiment huh

Meg

This unlocked such a memory ugh I was getting ready for college when you released this and this was everything I couldn’t figure out how to get around. Your version now feels kinder, good to be on this end of it.

I'm 22 and I feel like this is the type of song that I'd listen to when I still get those moments of teenage angst (saying this in the most holyshitthisissorelatableandvulnerableireallylikeit way possible) Even though the uke adds so much character to the song, I don't know why I can also picture it as a slow piano ballad Really cool, saludos desde México :)

Ciarán L

it's good! there's something powerful, i think, in finding love for your past selves

Valerie M

so beautiful. i think i prefer this version :) you seem much more comfortable singing it now!

First time I've heard this and both the song and the current perspective are very relatable. Relatable enough to hit me in my deepest core, I like to say something show appreciation to any art that hits me that deep. I love the last paragraph in the commentary where you said the honesty in the song is so good that you can instantly put yourself there, which allows for all those feelings from that time to be felt in the present. And you saying that you feel somewhat motherly to your past self. Part of the integration of Self is seeing your past self in that way. The goal is to get to the inner child and when in active imagination or dream state, seeing your past self and inner child with feelings of parental love, acceptance and forgiveness is the end goal for inner work and healing. Your genuine authenticity and fluidity of expression is truly a beautiful thing to see in the world.

howsyeeday

Thank you for the song

ayybowman

relatable pain what else can one say you crushed it, could not have asked for a better way to start the warmer days (and am also reminded that the eclipse is only a month away)

Hearing you talk about yourself helps me think about myself. We're quite different people and that gives me ideas I wouldn't have had.

smallfry4olives

as god intended is so funny to me.. i get the feeling you're a very funny girl

bailey bayer

this made my day a little better ❤️ here's to being more motherly to ourselves more often

(hater yet simultaneous lover warning 🚨 ?) It's a crying shame that Colleen Ballinger has single-handedly dampened any enjoyment that I had for the ukulele because your voice (even in present) & how you express the self via any given emotions/ideas in these songs both contextually & rhythmically with said instrument & pure honesty is gorgeous. You are definitely one of the exceptions to the standard, at least in my mind. Loved hearing these songs/covers on YT when I first came across them and I'm grateful that you uploaded one of these again after all this time. Was kind of hoping a video like this would surface onto the Patreon eventually & now I'm content. A touching throwback indeed. :)

I love this song! I still remembered the lyrics. Be proud of 19 year old Sav she worked hard on those original songs and Halsey covers. I used to listen to them whenever I was having a bad day and needed to listen to someone I felt could relate. Maybe you'll throw us a curveball and do a surprise song video again in the future I think that'd be really cool.

Rosie (Rozita)

would pay for an album from you even if it's just closer, baby, closer sang over a poorly played synth

tana m

this was very comforting for me, thank you for sharing <3

remi

ever since i first found your videos years ago, not long after you uploaded this song originally, it gained a special place in my heart. i have gone back to it many times over the years when i felt like i needed to be seen and understood. thank you

I'm always fascinated when the same song can shift in meaning and tone depending simply on who is singing it and what point in life they're at. The same confusion and sense of loneliness you felt as a teenager may haunt you decades later and be just as true, even if it took on a different hue and maybe isn't so overwhelming anymore, since you built up other parts of yourself around it. I'm exactly at a point in my life where an echo of this teenage awkwardness and alienation is making me feel like a high schooler again in many ways, and this throwback really resonates with that feeling. This was lovely, I can only hope we'll hear more music from you again!

this feels like a good place to say that one of my top five favourite songs of all time is your song 'fantastic animals'. i have the unlisted video saved in a playlist just for my enjoyment and i actually covered it a few years ago (https://youtu.be/bCxVoZwkfLc?si=VqzgR3IEOTuTRFk4)

Heitor do Nascimento Golfe

I don't know if what i''m typing makes any sence, but I stop in the middle of the text to think "damn, when you are acostumed to not-liking what you do, when that dosen't happen is so strange right? "

Heitor do Nascimento Golfe

When that happens to me I always find myself getting a bit hype and "there must be something here, how did I make this ? "

Thalia

this and fantastic animals always had a place in my heart

I remember this song from so many years ago. Sometimes I still sing it to myself while I am going about my business.

Abby VandenBerg

I loved (and still love) this song! Thanks for reposting!

Manon Memmi

+1!!! (minus the covering part). It's been going around my head loads recently.

ngl, i like the original better. still hella good

🔛🔝🔜

Aidan

And you’re killing it 🧡

Aidan

Is there a legal way to get this on my iTunes?

Aidan

If not I’ll figure it dw

Fergus Murray

This is really lovely - in both versions. I do prefer the newer one, but both work (the original feels a lot more jagged to me, but I think that's more in the playing than the singing). The sigh at the end of the new one, and the momentary look to camera at the end of the original, are both heart-wrenching. And yes, all very relatably undiagnosed-autistic...

mush

god everything really is autism isn't it I love your music. thank you

Lynn

I loved this in 2015 when I was 13 & I love it now!
